Fragmented Reflections

The collection is inspired by the artist’s eternal struggle of choosing between devoting themselves to their art, and secluding themselves for the sake of their art, or living their life and subsequently, forsaking their art. This struggle is the center of Lord Alfred Tennyson’s, The Lady of Shalott.

Having dedicated her life to weaving and bound by a curse, the Lady of Shalott lives on her island, secluded from the world. She watches the people live their lives through the reflection of the window from her mirror. One day, as Sir Lancelot is riding to Camelot, his singing catches her attention and tempts her to look out the window. Thus, her mirror breaks, the curse begins and her end is nigh. She drifts down the river in a boat, wrapped in her tapestry, and succumbs to the cold of the night. The people of Camelot watch her lifeless body pass through the city, never having truly known who the Lady of Shalott was.

Drawing from the broken mirror, extant medieval garments, and Gothic Cathedral architecture, the story is told through each piece in this collection and my own fragmented reflections in the Lady of Shalott are uncovered.
