It had just rained before arriving at Goshavank, my favourite church in Armenia since my first visit in 2008. Off to the side of the main church, there is an archway that leads you to two separate rooms. Walking through that archway and into the first dark, damp, stone room, in a solitary state standing in the dark, I couldn’t help, but feel connected to the past. There is an ancient presence throughout Armenia and there has always been a special connection here, specifically, for me in this complex completed between the 12th-13th centuries. This painting was painted from the photo I took looking back and reflecting on that moment in that room.
Part of my collection of paintings from my last trip to Armenia in 2023, I hope to capture these one of a kind moments from my homeland and document the beauty of my culture.
